The
Music of the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum
(2005)
In
addition to 2 1/2 hours of music for Abraham
Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum, BRC
Imagination Arts commissioned David Kneupper for a concert
work for orchestra based on music from the American Civil
War. The result was the five-movement Civil War Suite,
and two of those movements are included here.
from Civil War Suite
Dixie’s Land (1859)
by Daniel D. Emmett
The Battle Cry of
Freedom (1862) by George F. Root
To capture the tragedy of Gettysburg in music,
the two iconic songs of the North and South – Battle
Hymn of the Republic and Dixie’s Land – grind
together in a single piece of music by David Kneupper. In the
Museum, this music accompanies a 50-foot mural of the battle
of Gettysburg by painter Keith Rocco.

Chorus I
Mine eyes have seen the glory of the
coming of the
Lord, He is
trampling out the vintage where the
grapes
of wrath are stored, He hath
loosed the fateful lightening
of his
terrible swift sword. His
truth is marching on.
His
truth is marching on. Mine
eyes have seen the glory
of the
coming of the Lord.
I have seen Him in the watchfires of
a
hundred circling camps. They have
builded him an altar
in the
evening dews and damps. I can
read His righteous
sentence by the
dim and flaring lamps. His
day is marching
on. Glory of the
coming of the Lord. Mine
eyes have seen
the glory of the
coming of the Lord.
His truth is marching
on.

Chorus II
Wish I was in the land of cotton
Old times there
are not forgotten look a-
way, look away, look a-
way,
Dixie Land. Oh I
wish I was in Dixie, Hoo-
ray! Hooray!
Oh in Dixie Land I’ll take
my stand, to
live and
die in Dixie. A-
way, away, a-
way down South in Dixie.
Dixie Land where I was born in
early one frosty mornin’ look
a-
way, look away, look a- way, Dixie Land. Oh I
wish
I was in Dixie, Hoo-
ray! Hooray! Oh in Dixie Land
I’ll take
my stand, to
Live and die in Dixie.
A-
way, away, a-
way down South in Dixie.
